The recent Godsmack concert at MGM National Harbor was an electrifying experience that showcased the band’s raw talent and stage presence.

The event was an intimate evening with the band as well as the final show of their 2024 Vibez Tour.

Live Review: Al di Meola @ The Birchmere — 5/3/24

Guitar virtuosos Al di Meola’s recent performance at The Birchmere almost didn’t happen.

Last September, while performing at the Arenele Romane in Bucharest, Romania, the jazz-fusion legend suffered a heart attack on stage. Fortunately, he was attended to by, as he said, “the one doctor in the country” who was capable of dealing with the situation.

Live Review: Belle and Sebastian w/ The Weather Station @ The Anthem — 5/2/24

There is a feeling I get from listening to a Belle and Sebastian record. Maybe it’s the way they straddle that line between boundless joy and melancholy. Or, maybe, it’s the way those songs feel so familiar — borrowing from 1960s pop and classically baroque melodies.

But whatever it is, it’s a sound that is hard to shake, even after you’ve gone on to other things throughout my day. The six-piece band took over The Anthem Friday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Live Review: Teen Suicide @ Baltimore Soundstage — 4/28/24

Most artists who’ve lived there would agree that Baltimore is a fascinating place that can both inspire and disturb.

While no one will accuse it of being perfect, the Charm City’s a busy hatchery for musicians of all forms and has given birth to a long list of bands that have that spent formative years there.

Assuming a name that immediately grabs attention and — even in Baltimore — can unsettle, Teen Suicide formed there in 2009 as an indie rock project and one of a couple different songwriting outlets for guitar player and vocalist Sam Ray. Teen Suicide returned to Baltimore recently for a show at Baltimore Soundstage, which was itself inspiring.

Washington, DC-based quartet Dear Daria wears its love of ’90s pop culture proudly on its proverbial sleeve in their latest song and music video, “Tino.”

Inspired by a character in the iconic single season cult classic My So-Called Life, “Tino” is regularly referenced, but never shown.

Live Review: SUM 41 @ Pier Six Concert Pavilion — 4/29/24

Going out with a bang is an apt description of not only Sum 41’s final tour, Tour of The Setting Sum, but also a pretty good summation of their new (and, for the foreseeable future, last) album, Heaven :x: Hell.

The record, released last month, is a mammoth double LP with two distinct “sides”: a heaven made of pop punk anthems, and a hell full of rock numbers inspired by heavy metal’s finest. I have to say, for a final album — a record that, for many bands calling it a day, would be mediocre at best — Heaven :x: Hell is one of the Canadian band’s finest. Just try to get songs like “Landmines,” the albums first single, out of your head even after a quick play through.

Sum 41 has released eight albums in their storied career and a little bit of everything was on display at the band’s recent stop in Baltimore. And you couldn’t ask for better weather for the beginning of the outdoor concert season at Pier Six, as pop-punk fans made their way onto the pier.

Live Review: Sam Evian w/ Hannah Cohen @ The Atlantis — 4/27/24

Talented and creative people attract those of the same order, especially in music.

Sam Evian has released a compelling album every two or three years since he first started recording in 2016, and in that time, he’s also established himself as a respected producer, as numerous skyrocketing indie rock acts — including Big Thief — have turned to him and his Catskills-based Flying Cloud recording studio to assist on major releases that have gone on to garner critical acclaim.

Sam’s growing resume speaks volumes to his abilities and reputation, but with his own latest release, Plunge, he reminds that he himself is indeed a marvelous songwriter with remarkable intuition and the ambition to carefully realize one of this year’s dreamiest and most remedial albums. The strength of that album helped sell out Sam’s recent performance at The Atlantis in DC.

Live Review: Kris Delmhorst @ New Prospect Theatre (Bellingham, WA) — 4/28/24

My journey to a new home in Bellingham, Washington, in 2022 has led to a wonderful journey of discovery. One of those discoveries has been the listening room at the New Prospect Theatre (NPT).

Not long ago, the theatre again expanded my musical horizons when I and a small, but enthusiastic, audience experienced a gorgeous and gentle Kris Delmhorst performance.
